The opening print of Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji and the most reproduced image in Japanese art. A wave rears over three fast boats while Fuji sits small and still in the trough — the mountain, not the wave, is the subject. Hokusai was around seventy, and the deep blue is Prussian blue, a pigment newly imported into Japan.
