Prisoners walk a circle they cannot leave, between walls that close off the sky. Van Gogh painted it in the asylum at Saint-Rémy, working from an engraving by Gustave Doré—one of the few times he took another artist's image as his subject—and the pale figure looking out at the viewer is often read as himself.
